The Scottsdale School Board voted 3-2 to close Laguna and Copper Ridge at the end of the school year. Desert Canyon and Redfield, the other two schools considered for closure, will remain open.

The vote followed several weeks of emotional public comment. More than 100 people attended Tuesday night's meeting at Coronado High School. Some parents sought a one-year delay, while others wanted a decision so they could plan ahead.

Board members Amy Carney and Carine Werner supported postponing the decision to discuss other financial options. Parents affected by the closures are considering whether to stay in the district or choose charter or private schools.

Before the debate, board members acknowledged a letter from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. It said the district had violated Arizona's Open Meeting Law by failing to make school-closure advisory meetings open to the public.
