The Scottsdale school board voted 3-2 to close Laguna Elementary at the end of the school year. The board also voted to close Copper Ridge.
Before the vote, Laguna parents urged board members to delay the decision and spend more time reviewing the data. The board said it chose the option that would affect the fewest students and save the most money.
Laguna parents said they were heartbroken by the decision. PTO leaders want to make the school's final year memorable for students and families, while some parents said they are considering leaving the district. Laguna parent Micah Desjardins said the school's proximity to his home and his family's close ties with staff gave him peace of mind; he may consider other options, including private school.
