San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors approved an immediate, 45-day citywide moratorium on data centers, pausing new construction, including a proposed facility in Dogpatch.
District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton proposed the measure, with Supervisors Connie Chan, Jackie Fielder and Cheyenne Chen as co-sponsors. It follows concerns about possible environmental effects, particularly in the city’s industrial southeast, where many data centers are planned or already operating.
During the pause, the planning department will study effects on water, energy, air quality, land use and nearby communities. The Planning Commission will assess whether facilities across the city pose an environmental threat to residents, and the department will present its findings at a hearing after the 45-day period.
If significant environmental impacts are found, the pause could be extended for up to 22 months. Permanent controls or restrictions are another possible outcome.
