Opponents of Proposition G are putting children at the center of their campaign to keep San Francisco’s Sunset Dunes car-free. The measure would reopen the Great Highway to cars on weekdays.
The campaign is running two Facebook and Instagram ads, one focused on the cost of reopening the road and the other on the potential loss of park benches and a playground. Both feature children at the park, including its new Shipwreck Cove play structure near Ocean Beach.
Shipwreck Cove opened last month as a one-year pilot that can be extended. Friends of Sunset Dunes, which backed the 2024 measure that created the park, raised $800,000 in private donations to build it.
The Great Highway dispute has also centered on traffic diverted onto nearby residential streets and concerns about safety there. With four weeks until the election, the playground has become a prominent part of the campaign against reopening the road.
