State Sen. Scott Wiener and San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan offered different approaches to AI regulation at a Thursday debate in their race for California’s 11th Congressional District.
The two Democrats are competing for the seat Nancy Pelosi is leaving after nearly 40 years representing San Francisco. Both support some regulation of artificial intelligence, but they disagree on data centers.
Chan called for a moratorium on data centers to give policymakers time to regulate AI. She also questioned Wiener’s support from major technology figures. Wiener said individual communities should decide whether to ban data centers.
Wiener cited his work on a California AI safety bill. An earlier version included a way to shut down AI systems and other safeguards, but Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed it.
