The Liberties remains closed indefinitely, and owner Ian Duggan is unsure whether he can reopen the Mission District bar and restaurant.
Duggan announced a Labor Day closure on Sept. 7 and said the business would reopen Tuesday. Instead, it has remained shut as he faces financial difficulties. Court records show Black Olive Capital LLC sued him in New York in August, alleging a balance of nearly $160,000 on a loan after penalties, attorney fees and interest. Duggan said he has struggled to repay the loan.
The Liberties opened in 2002 at 998 Guerrero St., at 22nd Street. A former customer and neighbor, Duggan took over in 2019. The bar has hosted bingo, trivia, live music and jam sessions, and offered $5 meals to people in need during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Duggan is considering bringing in another operator to keep the business going.
