A Washington state ballot measure that would bar transgender girls from girls’ school sports teams could pass in November, polling suggests. Voters will decide the initiative amid debate over who can participate on those teams.
The measure would require students seeking a place on a girls’ team to undergo sex verification through a genital exam, chromosome test or hormone test. Current state policy allows students to join teams that align with their gender identity.
National polling by the Pew Research Center found that 66% of Americans support requiring transgender athletes to play on teams corresponding to their sex at birth. National and local polling suggest the Washington measure may have enough support to pass, though that remains uncertain until voters cast their ballots.
