Seattle officials have issued emergency orders to close a homeless encampment at 42 Avenue South and Beacon Avenue South, near Rainier Beach and Beacon Hill. City agencies plan to clear the site following a recent violent incident.
The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections said the incident created an imminent threat to public safety and prompted the Sept. 29 orders. The city is coordinating its response and offering housing options to people at the encampment, who must leave or accept help.
Neighbors and property owners have complained for years about conditions there. Property owners say requests for assistance went unanswered; one said a 2024 attempt to remove campers stalled because the city required coordination. A man was killed in a shootout at the site in 2025.
