The Washington Immigration Solidarity Network laid off roughly half its staff on Wednesday amid what current and former workers describe as a severe funding shortfall. The group operates deportation hotlines and links immigrants to aid organizations across Washington.
The latest cuts brought this year’s layoffs to 18 people. Hours and benefits have also been reduced for other employees, and more workers face furloughs, according to current and former staff.
The layoffs followed WAISN’s refusal to recognize a union of immigrant rights organizers and a call center operator. Workers allege that some staff were fired over union organizing or criticism of management. Meanwhile, ICE reports record arrest levels nationwide, and Seattle ICE watchers report a local increase ahead of the election.
