Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning” appeared headed for a $5.5 million domestic opening weekend, based on Sunday estimates. That would fall short of the studio’s $7 million to $8 million projection.
The film follows Sorkin’s “The Social Network” but turns to whistleblower Frances Haugen’s decision to leak documents that became known as the Facebook files. The earlier film opened to $22 million in 2010 and earned $97 million domestically overall.
The weekend estimate remains preliminary, and the new film’s eventual total is not yet known. Its projected opening puts it well below its predecessor’s debut, even before accounting for the years between the two releases.
