A Brooklyn toy shop says the item Kelly Clarkson wanted to buy was not for sale, disputing her account of a poor shopping experience.
In an Instagram statement, Art of Play said Clarkson had asked about Molly, a singing and dancing bird automaton used in its magic shows. The shop said the bird is permanently fixed to a wall. Clarkson had earlier posted that staff treated her poorly, comparing the encounter to the shopping scene in Pretty Woman.
The shop acknowledged that Clarkson’s account would resonate with people who have felt judged while shopping. It also said her post brought a wave of attacks against the small business, claiming that 8 million people who had never visited the store had joined in. Staff said they hoped to clear things up with Clarkson.
