Hundreds of shoppers turned out Friday for the opening of Uniqlo’s store at 801 Market St. in San Francisco. Before the 10 a.m. opening, the line stretched along Market Street and partway down the block at Fifth Street.
The Japanese clothing retailer marked the launch with a street festival. DJ sets played on Ellis Street while artists assembled installations nearby. The celebration took place on a block that has contended with prominent retail vacancies.
Inside, shoppers queued again for San Francisco-themed Muni T-shirts, with a line winding around the second floor by midday. Early visitors received items from Dandelion Chocolate, Philz Coffee and Boudin Bakery. Visitors said the wait to enter was about 25 minutes despite the long outdoor line.
There were minor disruptions: one escalator to the second floor was out of service, and commuters passed through the ribbon-cutting. The turnout nonetheless gave the opening a festival atmosphere.
