Port Houston has completed the sections it led of Project 11, an expansion of the Houston Ship Channel. The port marked the milestone on October 8 with elected officials and industry partners.
Work along the channel’s Galveston Bay reach widened it from 530 feet to 700 feet. Dredged material was also used to create bird islands, oyster reefs and marsh habitat.
The port says the wider channel improves safety and efficiency for vessels and supports growing trade. Port Houston and industry partners agreed to help pay for the project to speed up delivery; federal sources are funding the remainder. The milestone covers the port-led sections, not necessarily the entire expansion.
