Port of Los Angeles posts busiest summer stretch on record
The Port of Los Angeles handled 955,907 TEUs in August, capping the strongest three-month cargo run in its history, according to port figures. Combined volume for June through August topped 2.9 million TEUs.
August import traffic reached 500,302 TEUs, while exports fell to 115,561 TEUs and empty container moves rose to 340,044 TEUs. Through the first eight months of 2026, the port processed just over 7 million TEUs, up 1.5% from the same period last year.
Port Executive Director Gene Seroka said strong consumer demand, early holiday shipments and a varied cargo mix helped sustain activity through the summer. The broader U.S. import picture has also stayed firm, with the latest Global Port Tracker outlook projecting September as the busiest import month of the year at major U.S. container ports.
Seroka said September is also shaping up to be another strong month for Los Angeles as the port heads into the final stretch of the year.
