Metro has received a $25 million federal grant for the second phase of a freeway improvement project in Pomona, the agency announced Wednesday. The U.S. Department of Transportation funding will help close a two-mile gap in the Chino Valley (71) Freeway’s carpool-lane system.
The work will add a carpool lane and a general-purpose lane in each direction. Metro says the project will create more than 15 miles of carpool lanes along the corridor, improving connections among Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
Plans also call for rebuilding two railroad overpasses, replacing a pedestrian overcrossing, and adding retaining walls, sound walls and landscaping. The 71 Freeway links the 10 and 60 freeways; Metro says the corridor serves commuters and freight traffic traveling between the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports and distribution centers in eastern Los Angeles County. The project is also partly funded by Measure M, a county transportation sales tax approved by voters in 2016.
