Texas diesel prices hit a record average of $5.83 a gallon on Monday, moving close to the $6 mark.
AAA said the statewide diesel average was up 33 cents from a week earlier, 81 cents from a month ago and $2.62 from a year ago. Regular unleaded averaged $3.84 a gallon in Texas, also higher than last week, last month and last year.
The rise is already affecting groups that rely on fuel. Senior Access, which provides transportation for older adults in Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville and East Austin, is among the local organizations facing higher costs.
The Transportation Energy Institute has warned that higher diesel prices can spread through the broader economy because most goods are moved by truck. Texas prices still remain below the national averages reported by AAA: $6.23 for diesel and $4.31 for regular unleaded.
