The Bike fire burned 172 acres in Santa Clarita on Sunday, Oct. 11, triggering evacuation orders near Sand Canyon. The fire was 68% contained by 7 p.m.
Cal Fire said it began shortly before 2 p.m. near Cambria Estates Lane and Ravenhill Road. The ordered evacuation area reached Placerita Canyon Road to the south, Sand Canyon Road to the west and Golden Valley Ranch to the east. Other nearby areas were under evacuation warnings.
Los Angeles County officials identified College of the Canyons as an evacuation shelter. Animal evacuation centers were set up at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster and the Santa Clarita Valley Animal Care Center in Castaic. Sand Canyon Road was closed at Lost Canyon Road, while part of Placerita Canyon Road was also shut, Angeles National Forest said.
Los Angeles County fire Capt. Aaron Katon said erratic winds from weekend storms, vegetation and the area's hills helped the fire spread.
