Chicago mayoral field stands at 12 ahead of filing deadline
Twelve candidates are currently seeking to run for mayor of Chicago and are circulating nominating petitions ahead of the Oct. 26 filing deadline.
To qualify for the ballot, candidates need at least 12,500 signatures. The field is widely expected to shrink after filing closes and petition challenges begin.
Among the best-known contenders are Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. Johnson, 50, is seeking another term while facing weak approval ratings and a comparatively small campaign fund. Giannoulias, also 50, has built a far larger campaign account with backing from business leaders and building trade unions, making him an early frontrunner in the race as it stands now.
