SoMa generated about $9.4 million in sales-tax revenue in 2025, roughly 49 percent less than its $18.5 million total in 2019. The neighborhood’s business struggles are the focus of a question put to candidates for San Francisco’s District 6 supervisor seat.
The gap has persisted: adjusted for inflation, SoMa’s sales-tax revenue in the first quarter of 2026 was still roughly half its 2019 level. Nearby Mission Bay, also in District 6, saw revenue rise more than 20 percent between 2019 and 2025.
Henry Karnilowicz, president of the South of Market Business Association, has pointed to fewer office workers and less foot traffic, along with business owners’ concerns about crime and public drug use. Incumbent Matt Dorsey, appointed in 2022, faces challenger Alex Behrend in November’s supervisor election.
