Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen says county leaders have directed the auditor to examine spending under Sheriff Gregory Tony’s roughly $870 million budget. Bogen and two commissioners are seeking more financial disclosure amid a months-long dispute with the sheriff.
The county plans to ask Tony for budget records first. Officials say they may go to court if the records are not handed over voluntarily. Bogen has accused Tony of failing to cooperate with commissioners’ requests.
Bogen also raised questions about a new sheriff’s training facility. County leaders say its construction cost exceeded the original plan by $40 million; the mayor asked whether it has a massage table, sauna, spa or cold plunge, but did not establish that those amenities are present.
In a separate move, commissioners decided to examine taking back oversight of the 911 call center and shifting airport, seaport and fire duties away from the sheriff’s office. Firefighters’ union vice president Walter Dix says the conflict is affecting firefighters and that they fear speaking out.
