More than one in three Chicago households face food insecurity, new report says
An estimated 35% of Chicago households face some form of food insecurity, according to a report released Monday by the Greater Chicago Food Depository with NORC at the University of Chicago.
The survey asked Chicago residents this summer whether anyone in their household had skipped meals or cut portion sizes in the previous 30 days because there was not enough money for food. The report says the problem is more widespread than earlier estimates suggested.
The depository said rising grocery prices and lingering financial strain since the COVID-19 pandemic are driving need. It also comes as SNAP, the federal food assistance program, faces expanded work requirements and a major shift in costs to states under President Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending plan.
