The Grand Street Bridge in Maspeth is expected to reopen early Saturday after emergency repairs. The city’s Department of Transportation anticipates finishing the work Friday night, Oct. 2, with the span reopening in the hours afterward.
The bridge, which crosses Newtown Creek between Queens and Williamsburg, Brooklyn, closed to vehicles on Thursday, Oct. 1. DOT crews carried out emergency repairs while the agency was already working on structural fixes and advancing plans for a full reconstruction.
Council Member Phil Wong called for renewed attention to replacing the aging swing bridge, saying the communities it serves should not face repeated emergency repairs and closures. More than 120 years old, the bridge connects the Maspeth and North Brooklyn industrial business zones. Data from 2019 put its average daily traffic at 11,400 vehicles, about two-thirds of them traveling toward Brooklyn.
