Gerrit Cole is expected to start for the New York Yankees against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday night.
Cole had been lined up for a possible Game 3 against the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Series. Carlos Rodón had been preparing for a potential Game 1 start if that series went the distance, and his stronger finish to the regular season gave him a case for the ALDS opener.
Cole finished the regular season with a 3.63 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 121⅓ innings after returning from Tommy John surgery. His September was less steady: he went 3-2 with a 5.08 ERA in five starts. Against Tampa Bay during the regular season, he posted a 2.50 ERA in three starts.
