Hollywood Burbank Airport opened its new $1.3 billion terminal Tuesday morning after 33 months of construction. The first departure, an Alaska flight to Santa Rosa, left at 7:03 a.m. with 33 passengers; a Southwest flight from Las Vegas was the first arrival, landing at 7:16 a.m.
The building at Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way has about 355,000 square feet of space, roughly 50% more than the airport’s two old terminals combined. Travelers encountered high ceilings, contemporary art, terrazzo floors, charging stations and landscaping with cactus and succulents.
The terminal retains the airport’s 14 gates and two runways. Tuesday’s schedule called for about 90 arrivals and departures across eight airlines, roughly matching the previous schedule. Passengers may still board some planes using outdoor steps from the tarmac.
