Two Miami vocalists receive full-ride Latin Grammy scholarships
Lea Garza and Melissa Cruz, two vocalists from Miami, have received full-ride scholarships through the Frost School of Music Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation Scholarship, with awards totaling $525,000.
The scholarships are intended to help aspiring young Latin musicians earn bachelor’s degrees. They also include additional career-enrichment activities overseen by the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation.
Garza and Cruz come from different musical backgrounds but both were shaped by family ties to music. Garza was born in Miami and moved to Mérida, Yucatán, at age 8, where she spent the next decade surrounded by music in her family. Cruz was influenced by her father, a laud player who performed across Cuba, and she later toured with him.
Both students pursued the scholarship after seeking admission to the Frost School of Music, a process that includes an audition, followed by a separate scholarship application.
