New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $10 million for a planned boys and girls club in Jackson Heights that would include the neighborhood’s first community swimming pool.

Hochul joined Queens officials, community groups and private partners at PS 398Q on Oct. 14 to announce the project. The center, planned as Jackson Heights’ first boys and girls club, would be operated by the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens.

The project has secured $33.8 million in public and private funding, more than half of its $60 million goal, Council Member Shekar Krishnan said. That total includes Hochul’s commitment, $10 million from Metropolitan Park and $9.3 million from the City Council, alongside contributions from federal and state lawmakers.

Krishnan has advocated for a community center in response to the neighborhood’s shortage of green space. He expects work to start soon, while Variety hopes to finish the center toward the end of the decade.
