Rikers leader suspended amid firing push
New York City’s Correction Department has suspended Selwyn Fergus and is seeking to remove him from his post over allegations that he made inappropriate comments to a female subordinate.
Fergus, 66, was promoted to associate commissioner last month. The allegations were aired publicly at a Board of Correction hearing last week, where activist Victoria Phillips said people had reached out over misconduct concerns involving a senior correction official. Phillips did not name Fergus during the hearing.
Multiple jail sources said Fergus also allegedly spoke about his close ties to Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards. His official city email account now appears to be inactive. The department’s move leaves open what disciplinary process comes next.
