Two new elevators have made the 137 St-City College 1 train station in West Harlem accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
One elevator serves the northbound platform and the other the southbound platform. The station serves about 9,400 riders a day and is the home stop for City College. It had previously lacked accessible entry.
At an Oct. 14 news conference unveiling the upgrades, MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo described a personal connection to the station. Arroyo, who uses a wheelchair, said he watched his mother carry his sister’s stroller up its stairs when he was young and had been unable to use the station himself for nearly two decades.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said the station dates to the subway’s original 1904 stretch, built by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company. Accessibility was not a priority when that network was designed, he said.
