Nearly 200 St. Gabriel Catholic School students are set to attend Wednesday’s White Sox playoff game at Rate Field after Houston businessman Jim McIngvale followed through on a wager.
McIngvale, a Houston Astros fan who owns Gallery Furniture, had offered the Canaryville school a deal: If the Sox beat the Astros in their Wild Card Series, he would buy students tickets to the next White Sox home playoff game. The Sox swept the two-game series, and McIngvale called Principal Julie Jurisic the next morning to honor his promise.
In all, 240 students, staff and chaperones are expected at Wednesday’s Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians. Jurisic said children as young as preschool age will go, with some parents serving as chaperones. McIngvale chose St. Gabriel partly because the school is within walking distance of Rate Field.
