Roughly 50 robotaxis were idling in a fenced lot at Fifth and Brannan in San Francisco’s SoMa, with vehicles cycling in and out of the site.
The staging yard appeared to be operating as a holding area for autonomous vehicles between trips. Cars were remotely sent out through the exit, then replaced by driverless vehicles returning from rides, according to observations described in the report.
The lot still had space for more vehicles, suggesting a larger parking capacity at the site. The activity also points to a less visible part of San Francisco’s autonomous-vehicle system: where cars wait when they are not on the street serving passengers.
The report frames the Fifth and Brannan site as part of a broader tension in SoMa, where open land has long been tied to parking and development pressure. No additional official details about the property’s status or future use were provided.
