A judge has given final approval to a $177 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit against AT&T over two data breaches. Millions of customers are eligible for payments, though the amount each person will receive remains uncertain.
Court documents divide the fund into $149 million for one settlement class and $28 million for another. Eligible customers in the first class may seek up to $5,000 for documented losses or choose a tiered cash payment. Those in the second may seek up to $2,500 for documented losses or a tiered payment. Lawyers expect actual cash payments to be much smaller.
The deadline to join the settlement has passed. The settlement website says payments will wait until the appeals deadline passes and claims have been reviewed; no payment date has been set.
AT&T reported both breaches in 2024. One involved call and text records affecting nearly all its customers, while the other involved a data set that AT&T said affected about 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former account holders.
