Washington State Ferries says the hybrid-electric Wenatchee has used about 13% less diesel fuel after a year of operation, saving roughly $1 million in fuel costs. David Sowers of the state transportation department’s electrification program described the figures as results seen so far.
The conversion replaced two of the ferry’s four 30-year-old diesel engines with battery banks during its mid-life maintenance. Crews have also observed a slight drop in emissions and noise.
The next conversions, for the Puyallup and Tacoma, remain on hold pending more funding and the arrival of new ferries starting in 2030. The department also plans charging stations at Seattle, Bainbridge and Clinton terminals. Sowers said plugging in at terminals is the step needed to move the vessels toward almost entirely electric operation.
