The White Sox face a win-or-go-home Game 5 in Cleveland after losing twice at home to the Guardians in the American League Division Series.
The defeats cost Chicago a chance to clinch the series in front of its fans. Second baseman Chase Meidroth said the team had not expected an easy sweep, while outfielder Tristan Peters pointed to its ability to respond after losses during the season.
Pitching was a concern in Thursday night’s defeat. Rookie Hagen Smith, working for a second straight day, struggled to throw strikes and did not finish the first inning. Grant Taylor failed to retire any of the six batters he faced; none of his 18 pitches drew a swinging strike. The White Sox now need a road win to advance to the American League Championship Series.
