Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger is scheduled to leave prison on Friday, Oct. 16, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said. She was convicted of murdering 26-year-old Botham Jean, whom she shot inside his apartment in September 2018.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles approved her release nearly three years before her sentence was due to end. Guyger received a 10-year prison term in October 2019; her appeals failed, and the board denied her first parole bid in 2024. In its latest decision, the board cited her prison adjustment, completion of treatment-plan activities and the absence of a documented pattern of violent or assaultive arrests or convictions.
At trial, Guyger testified that she had mistaken Jean’s apartment, one floor above hers, for her own and fired in self-defense. Jean’s family and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office opposed her release when she first became eligible for parole. A civil jury later found Guyger liable for Jean’s death and ordered her to pay his family $98.6 million.
