Clara Luvanga scored in the 84th minute to give the Washington Spirit a 3-2 win over the Houston Dash on Sunday night, ending Houston’s playoff hopes.
Miljana Ivanović scored twice for the Dash, who came back to tie the match on two occasions before Luvanga’s late goal. Both were Ivanović’s first NWSL goals. The Dash said she became the first Serbian player to score in league play.
Washington moved closer to a third straight playoff berth. With three matches remaining, the Spirit are third in the 16-team league at 15-8-4 and 49 points, nine points above the playoff line. They trail first-place Gotham FC by six points and the San Diego Wave by two, and sit five points above the threshold for hosting a quarterfinal.
