Eva Marie Saint, who won an Academy Award for her film debut in On the Waterfront, has died at 102. Family representative Jeff Sanderson confirmed that she died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles.
In the 1954 film, Saint played the love interest of Marlon Brando’s Terry Malloy. She accepted her Oscar while pregnant with her first child, a son born two days later. The award brought her immediate recognition, but she turned down studio contracts and took time away from films to be with him.
Saint later starred opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller North by Northwest. She credited her husband, director Jeffrey Hayden, with encouraging her to take the role. Her acting career continued into her 90s.
