South Miami residents and environmental advocates are asking city leaders to leave Jean Willis Park beside City Hall as redevelopment plans advance. Members of the Tropical Flowering Tree Society have started an online petition opposing a possible move to a site a block away near The Underline.
The group says the existing park is quieter and greener than the proposed location. Member Stephen Pearson raised concerns about trains passing overhead at the alternative site.
The wider redevelopment plan includes a new City Hall and housing. Mayor Javier Fernandez said officials are assessing the park's trees and whether they could survive a move. The project is still in the development agreement phase, and site plans have not been approved.
The city says a vote against relocating the park is on Tuesday's agenda.
