New York City is raising its maximum grant for individual artists and small nonprofits from $5,000 to $10,000, the first increase in nearly 20 years, city officials said.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the change on Oct. 2 with Deputy Mayor Julie Su and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Diya Vij. They said the higher ceiling is meant to help artists cope with rising living costs. Local arts organizations distribute the grants across all five boroughs to artists in a range of disciplines.
Applications are open in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. Staten Island’s application cycle is scheduled to begin in November. Starting this month, individual artists awarded grants through borough arts councils can also obtain free donated supplies from Materials for the Arts on the first Monday of each month.
