Oakland’s Children’s Fairyland is receiving $5 million from the state budget to support the storybook park’s operations and upgrades.
Of that sum, $2 million will cover operations and $3 million will go toward restoration and improvements, including replacement of pipes that are 100 years old. The investment completes the first phase of the park’s long-term capital plan.
Children’s Fairyland marked 75 years in Oakland last year. Its chief executive, Kymberly Miller, said the park still needs work on its sets and may need new buildings to offer indoor programs during winter. The park has faced challenges including the pandemic.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said the funding would help keep the park available for families. Assemblymember Mia Bonta described the investment as a way to preserve Oakland’s artistic and cultural legacy.
