San Francisco’s 45th annual Fleet Week opened Sunday with a military swearing-in ceremony at Pier 30, restoring a fuller program after a government shutdown kept the military from participating last year.
Mayor Daniel Lurie led the oath for recruits from across the Bay Area at an opening event with members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. It was his first time officially opening the annual celebration. One recruit, the son of Mountain View resident Patricia Cremer, is joining the Navy and hopes to serve on a submarine, she said.
The return of military participation also brings back a ship parade, public ship tours and neighborhood concerts by Navy and Marine musicians. The USS Cape Saint George arrived over the weekend; concerts begin Tuesday, and tours open Wednesday.
The Blue Angels have arrived in the Bay Area. Their practice flights are scheduled for Thursday, ahead of the main airshows beginning Friday.
