The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six games and fined him $500,000 for violating its personal conduct policy.

The discipline followed York’s Aug. 23 arrest in East Palestine, Ohio, during an undercover prostitution operation. Court records show he was initially charged with engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools. After a judge approved prosecutors’ request to change the prostitution charge to disorderly conduct, York pleaded no contest to that charge and the criminal-tools charge. He was found guilty of both.

York said he accepted the NFL’s decision, apologized to the team and its fans, and hoped to regain their trust. The first three games of the season, which he missed, count toward his suspension. He is eligible to return Oct. 20 and can attend his first game Oct. 25 against Atlanta.

York is the first 49ers owner suspended by the league since his uncle Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who received a one-year suspension and a $1 million fine in 1999.
