The U.S. economy added 29,000 jobs in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, well below economists’ forecast of 90,000.

The unemployment rate rose from 4.1% to 4.2%. More people entered the labor force in September, contributing to the increase in the jobless rate. Hiring also fell sharply from August’s reported gain of 162,000 jobs, while revisions to the previous two months reduced their combined job totals by 60,000.

Health care added 17,000 jobs. Average hourly earnings for private-sector workers were up 3% from a year earlier. The report gives the Federal Reserve a fresh reading on the labor market as it weighs its next steps.
