Kelly Clarkson and Brooklyn novelty store Art of Play are disputing what happened during her visit, after the singer said she felt judged while shopping there.
Clarkson said she had traveled to the store to buy items she had seen, but a staff member offered to find her something comparable instead of showing her what she wanted. She likened the experience to a shopping scene in Pretty Woman in which Julia Roberts’ character is dismissed by store staff. Her criticism has been viewed by millions.
Art of Play said the conversation concerned Molly, a singing and dancing bird automaton used in its magic shows. The store said Molly is fixed to a wall and not for sale. It also said visitors are welcome whether or not they buy anything. Clarkson has challenged the store’s response, and the two accounts remain at odds.
