Kelly Clarkson says a Brooklyn shop treated her as though she could not afford its merchandise. Art of Play says the item she asked to buy was not for sale.
Clarkson wrote on X on Saturday that she had visited the store intending to make purchases. She likened the encounter to a scene in Pretty Woman in which Julia Roberts’ character is snubbed at a boutique. Her complaint prompted criticism of the shop and negative online reviews.
In a statement Sunday, Art of Play identified the item as Molly, a mechanical bird used in its magic shows. The shop said it welcomes all visitors, but did not directly address Clarkson’s allegation about how an employee treated her. It described the reaction to her post as overwhelming.
