Volunteers at Seattle’s Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center are tending traditional plants, including tule, camas and salmonberries.

On Sept. 10, 2026, volunteers cleared weeds and debris from the center’s Seven Generations Children’s Teaching Garden. The garden-tending event began with a ceremony led by Shameka Gagnier, the center’s land cultural steward manager, who burned sage in an abalone shell.

Gagnier spoke to the group about plants as sustenance alongside salmon, water and animals. Involved with the center’s gardens since 2019, she has worked to learn about the plants and trees on the campus and share that knowledge with others.
