Thousands of security guards for major tech companies in San Francisco and Silicon Valley plan to strike starting Friday.
The planned walkout covers about 14,000 workers represented by Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West, following months of contract talks with 15 private security contractors and employers over pay and benefits.
The union says the dispute centers on wages and working conditions. A union press release says guards are seeking better pay and benefits after what it described as unfair labor practices during bargaining. Allied Universal said it would not comment on ongoing labor negotiations.
According to the union, the current offer would raise pay by 65 cents over the next two years. Guards now earn a median hourly wage of $20.09, based on a UC Berkeley study cited in the report, while the union says it is pushing for a path to $30 an hour.
