New York to mail energy rebate checks to 8.2 million households starting Sept. 21
New York will begin mailing energy rebate checks of up to $200 on Sept. 21, with payments continuing through December, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday.
The payments are part of the state's $1 billion Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate, or POWER, program in the fiscal 2026-27 budget. Hochul's office said the program is meant to ease higher utility and energy costs for households across the state.
Eligible residents do not need to apply. The state Department of Taxation and Finance will use information from 2024 New York income tax returns to determine eligibility and mail checks automatically.
Under the plan, joint tax filers with income below $150,000 will receive $200, joint filers with income from $150,000 to $300,000 will get $150, and single filers with income below $150,000 will receive $100.
