House advances bill on AI data center power costs
The House voted 417-3 on Wednesday to advance the Ratepayer Protection Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at keeping some AI data center electricity costs off household utility bills.
The measure would give states a framework they could adopt to require data centers with power demand of 100 megawatts or more to pay for new generation, transmission lines and other grid upgrades tied to their energy use, rather than shifting those costs to consumers.
According to the bill’s backers, the proposal is meant to address growing concern over the effect of large data centers on local power systems and electricity prices. The Senate has not yet acted on the legislation.
