Tesla tax break advances in Fort Bend
Lamar CISD has approved a tax break tied to Tesla’s proposed $10 billion solar manufacturing plant in Fort Bend County, clearing the project for the next stage of state review.
The school board voted unanimously Tuesday night. Under the application, Tesla’s school tax bill on eligible property would be cut in half from 2029 through 2038 through the state’s Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation program, and the request now moves to Gov. Greg Abbott’s office for approval.
Project documents describe the facility as Project Crystal Sun, a plant for making solar cells and panels used in utility-scale solar farms, commercial buildings and homes. The company is considering more than 1,000 acres in the southeastern part of the county, with construction projected to start in 2026 and finish in 2028.
The Texas comptroller’s office estimates the proposed tax limitation would deliver about $115.2 million in tax benefits over 20 years.
