Long Beach officials have red-tagged 13 beachfront homes as waves from Tropical Storm Rachel batter the Southern California coast. The designation means the residences are too dangerous to enter.
On the Alamitos Peninsula, powerful surf has eroded sand beneath homes and damaged a boardwalk. An account updated Friday night reported eight red-tagged homes; the timing of that count relative to the report of 13 is unclear. City officials said they were assessing further damage while residents worked to reinforce their properties.
Crews have been building a sand berm and repairing a damaged 30-foot section of seawall. The city’s seven-point protection plan includes emergency repairs, adding sand to the beach and longer-term coastal measures.
